Federal Government Moves to Fully Implement 2025 Agreement with ASUU, Inaugurates Monitoring Committee
ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has taken a major step toward ensuring lasting industrial peace in Nigeria’s university system by inaugurating the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Agreement.
The committee, inaugurated in Abuja, is tasked with overseeing the full, timely, and transparent implementation of all provisions contained in the agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the development as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen stability and improve governance within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
According to the minister, the committee was established to ensure strict adherence to agreed timelines and deliverables, monitor compliance with the agreement, and facilitate effective engagement among key stakeholders.
She noted that the successful conclusion of negotiations between the Federal Government and ASUU underscores the commitment of both parties to dialogue, mutual respect, and the pursuit of sustainable reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of university education in the country.
“The inauguration of this committee demonstrates our collective resolve to ensure that all aspects of the agreement are implemented effectively and transparently,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel O. Enitan, described the inauguration as an important step toward strengthening accountability and governance mechanisms in the education sector.
He urged members of the committee to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, objectivity, and dedication to national interest.
Chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, assured stakeholders of the committee’s commitment to diligence, transparency, and effective monitoring of the agreement’s implementation.
Meanwhile, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, called for sustained engagement between the union and government, emphasizing the importance of regular meetings to address emerging issues and maintain industrial harmony.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the 2025 agreement, expressing optimism that the move would foster lasting peace, stability, and progress across Nigerian universities.
The inauguration of the committee is expected to strengthen trust between the government and university lecturers while helping to prevent disruptions to academic activities nationwide.
