“Defend Yourselves or Perish”: Kebbi Emir Calls on Communities to Raise Funds for Weapons Against Bandits
ARGUNGU, KEBBI STATE – The Emir of Argungu and prominent traditional ruler in Kebbi State, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammadu Mera, has called on local communities to unite and contribute funds for the purchase of weapons to protect themselves against the growing threat of bandit attacks.
Speaking amid escalating insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, the monarch stressed that communities can no longer afford to remain passive while armed criminals continue to terrorize residents through kidnappings and violent attacks.
According to the traditional ruler, every town and village must take responsibility for its own security and be prepared to defend its people. He lamented the increasing cases of bandits abducting women and children, insisting that communities should not sit back helplessly while their lives and livelihoods remain under constant threat.
“The time has come for communities to organize and defend themselves. It is unacceptable for people to continue watching as bandits invade their towns and kidnap their wives and children,” he said.
The Emir's remarks reflect growing frustration among residents in several northern states where banditry, kidnapping, and rural attacks have continued despite ongoing security operations by government forces.
His call is expected to spark debate over community-based security measures and the role of local self-defence initiatives in addressing Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
