How Electricity and Pipe-Borne Water Transformed Kano in 1920

The ancient city of Kano witnessed a major turning point in its history in 1920 when electricity was introduced through the installation of electric poles across parts of the city.

The arrival of electricity marked the beginning of modern infrastructure in Kano, making it one of the earliest cities in Northern Nigeria to embrace technological development during the colonial era. The new power supply brought significant changes to administration, commerce, and daily life, helping the city strengthen its position as a major economic hub in the region.

Around the same period, Kano also became one of the first places in Northern Nigeria to benefit from pipe-borne water. The introduction of a modern water supply system improved sanitation, public health, and access to clean water for residents, representing another major milestone in the city’s development.

These early infrastructural projects laid the foundation for Kano’s transformation into one of Nigeria’s most influential commercial and cultural centres. Historians often regard the arrival of electricity and piped water as key moments that accelerated urban growth and modernization in the ancient city.

Today, Kano remains one of the most historically significant cities in Nigeria, with its early adoption of modern utilities standing as a reminder of its long-standing importance in the country’s development.
