Deadly Hantavirus: 5 Critical Facts Everyone Should Know

Health experts have raised concerns over the growing awareness of Hantavirus, a dangerous rodent-borne disease that currently has no specific cure and can become fatal if not treated early.

The virus is primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents, especially rats and mice. People can become infected by inhaling air contaminated with rodent urine, saliva, or droppings, particularly in poorly ventilated areas such as abandoned buildings, warehouses, and farms.

Medical professionals say one of the major challenges with hantavirus is that its early symptoms often resemble common illnesses such as flu or malaria. Infected persons may initially experience fever, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and chills.

However, the disease can rapidly worsen and develop into severe respiratory complications known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which can lead to breathing failure and death if urgent medical attention is not provided.

Experts have also confirmed that there is currently no approved cure or specific antiviral treatment for hantavirus. Treatment mainly focuses on supportive medical care, including oxygen therapy and intensive monitoring to improve survival chances.

Health authorities, including World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, continue to stress the importance of prevention as the best form of protection against the disease.

They advised members of the public to keep homes and food storage areas clean, block rodent entry points, and wear protective gear when cleaning areas suspected to be infested by rodents.

Experts also warned against sweeping dry rodent droppings directly, as the action can release contaminated particles into the air and increase the risk of infection.
