Abu Hanifa’s Honesty in Trade Continues to Inspire Generations

By AA Tijjani
One of the most respected Islamic scholars in history, Imam Abu Hanifa, has continued to be remembered not only for his vast religious knowledge but also for his remarkable honesty and integrity in business dealings.

According to a popular account from Islamic history, Imam Abu Hanifa once encountered a woman who came to his shop to sell a valuable piece of silk cloth. Unaware of its true market value, the woman initially offered the fabric for 100 coins.

After carefully examining the cloth, the scholar realized it was worth far more than the amount she requested. Instead of taking advantage of the situation, he informed her that the material was more valuable than she thought.

The woman then increased the price to 200 coins, but Imam Abu Hanifa insisted it was still worth more. As the negotiations continued, she became surprised and questioned whether he was mocking her.

To assure her of his sincerity, the renowned scholar invited another merchant to assess the cloth. After evaluation, the merchant estimated its actual value at 500 coins.

Imam Abu Hanifa immediately paid the full amount without hesitation.

His action reportedly astonished those around him, many of whom wondered why he refused to purchase the cloth at the lower price initially offered by the woman.

Responding to their curiosity, the scholar is said to have remarked:

> “If wealth comes through deception, then blessings leave with it.”

The story has since remained one of the timeless examples of honesty, fairness, and moral character in Islamic history, inspiring Muslims and non-Muslims alike on the importance of integrity in everyday life.
