Zamfara Workers’ Cooperative Drags State Government to Court Over ₦345.6 Million Withheld Funds

,The Zamfara State Workers’ Cooperative Union has taken the state government to court over the alleged withholding of ₦345.6 million deducted from workers’ salaries, accusing authorities of failing to remit the funds to cooperative societies.

In a statement signed by the union’s chairman, Shamsudeen A. Sadeeq, the group said the legal action became necessary after several attempts to resolve the matter through dialogue and reconciliation with the government proved unsuccessful.

According to the union, the disputed funds were deducted from workers’ salaries during July 2021, March 2023, and September 2024, but were never transferred to the respective cooperative societies as required.

The cooperative body further alleged that the government also suspended the regular deduction of cooperative contributions from workers’ salaries without proper explanation, a move it said has disrupted the financial activities and obligations of many members.

The union is therefore demanding the immediate resumption of cooperative deductions from workers’ salaries and the full repayment of all outstanding funds owed by the state government.

The case is expected to test the accountability of public institutions in managing workers’ financial contributions and could have wider implications for labor relations and cooperative operations within Zamfara State.
