Seven Teachers Arrested in Jigawa Over Alleged Examination Malpractice During Competency Test

Authorities in Jigawa State have arrested seven teachers over alleged involvement in examination malpractice during a statewide competency assessment organized for primary school teachers.

The arrests were carried out by the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) while the examination was in progress. The test reportedly involved more than 8,400 teachers across the state and was designed to evaluate their professional competence and teaching capacity.

Chairman of the board, Haruna Musa, confirmed that the suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

According to Musa, the competency test forms part of the state government’s broader reform efforts to strengthen the education sector and ensure that only qualified and capable teachers remain in the classroom. He explained that the primary objective of the assessment is not merely to evaluate teachers, but to identify knowledge and skills gaps and provide targeted training to address those deficiencies.

He further emphasized that the government is committed to restoring the standard and reputation of public education in the state by enforcing professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct among teachers.

The SUBEB chairman also issued a stern warning to teachers against absenteeism, unauthorized absence from duty, and involvement in partisan political activities while in service. He stressed that strict disciplinary measures would be taken against any staff found violating established regulations.

Officials described the arrest of the seven teachers as a clear warning to others and a demonstration of the government’s resolve to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline within the education system in Jigawa State.
