19 Migrants Found Dead, 58 Rescued in Mediterranean Sea Near Lampedusa
Tragedy struck in the Mediterranean Sea as the Italian Coast Guard recovered the bodies of 19 migrants and rescued 58 survivors, including children, from an overcrowded boat near the island of Lampedusa.
According to rescue authorities, the migrants were traveling in a small, overloaded vessel that encountered severe difficulties while attempting to cross from Libya to Europe. The boat was discovered drifting in dangerous weather conditions roughly 80 to 85 nautical miles off the southern Italian island.
Officials said the survivors—among them five children—were safely transported to Lampedusa, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Several victims reportedly suffered from hypothermia and exposure, believed to be the main cause of death after passengers spent days at sea in cold temperatures and rough waves.
Reports indicate that the migrants departed from Libya earlier in the week before their boat broke down in the open sea. Strong winds, heavy rain, and waves reaching up to six to seven meters high created life-threatening conditions, leaving passengers stranded without assistance for an extended period.
Rescue teams located the vessel after it was spotted by a reconnaissance aircraft. Authorities noted that no other ships were available in the area at the time, forcing the Italian Coast Guard to conduct the emergency operation alone.
