What To Do If You Miss One Rak‘ah in Taraweeh Prayer
During Ramadan, it is common for some worshippers to arrive late and join the congregation after the prayer has already started. This raises an important question: what should a person do if they catch only part of the prayer with the imam?
The ruling follows a general principle of taught by :
“Whatever you catch with the imam, pray it; and whatever you miss, complete it.”
This means that any part of the prayer you miss should be completed after the imam finishes the prayer.
If You Catch the Imam in Ruku‘ (Bowing)
If you enter the prayer while the imam is already in ruku‘ and you bow before he rises, that rak‘ah counts for you.
What you should do:
- Say Allahu Akbar while standing to enter the prayer.
- Then go into ruku‘ with the imam.
- Continue praying normally with the congregation.
If you successfully catch the ruku‘ before the imam stands up, you have caught that rak‘ah.
If You Join While the Imam Is Standing
If you join the prayer while the imam is standing and reciting the Qur’an, that rak‘ah also counts for you.
For example:
- The imam is in the second rak‘ah.
- You join while he is still standing.
- After the imam ends the prayer with tasleem, you stand up and pray one more rak‘ah to complete your two rak‘ahs.
If You Join During Sujood (Prostration)
If you enter the prayer while the imam is already in sujood, that rak‘ah does not count, because you missed the ruku‘ which is a major pillar of the prayer.
What to do:
- Follow the imam in sujood.
- When the imam finishes the prayer, stand up and pray two full rak‘ahs.
If You Join During the Final Tashahhud
Sometimes a person arrives when the imam is already sitting for tashahhud at the end of the prayer.
In this case:
- Sit with the imam.
- Wait until he finishes with tasleem.
- Stand up and pray two rak‘ahs on your own.
Joining the congregation still earns the reward of praying in jama‘ah.
If You Catch Only One Rak‘ah
This is one of the most common situations in .
Example:
- The imam is already in the second rak‘ah when you join.
- You pray that rak‘ah with him.
- When the imam says tasleem, you stand up and pray one more rak‘ah to complete the pair.
A Common Mistake When Joining in Ruku‘
Many people rush into ruku‘ when they see the imam bowing. However, some make a mistake that could affect the validity of their rak‘ah.
The correct way
When joining the prayer:
- First say Allahu Akbar while standing (this is called Takbiratul-Ihram).
- Then move into ruku‘.
Why this matters
Standing while saying the opening Allahu Akbar is a pillar of the prayer. If someone says it while already bending into ruku‘ without standing properly, some scholars say the rak‘ah may not count.
