At Least Nine Killed in Deadliest Iranian Missile Strike on Israel Since Retaliatory Campaign Began
At least nine people have been killed after an Iranian missile struck a residential building in central Israel, making it the deadliest direct attack on Israeli civilians since Tehran launched its ongoing campaign of retaliation against Israeli and U.S. strikes.
The attack, which hit a residential structure in the town of Beit Shemesh, caused extensive damage to the building and surrounding area, according to emergency responders. Israeli medical and rescue services reported that more than 20 people were wounded in the blast, with several in serious condition.
The strike came amid a sharp escalation in the Israel–Iran conflict, triggered after a joint U.S.–Israeli military operation targeted strategic sites in Iran, including leadership facilities. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported killed by some international outlets following the initial attacks, a development that has intensified Tehran’s vow of retaliation and widened the conflict across the region.
In response to the offensive on Iranian territory, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps launched waves of ballistic missiles and drones toward Israeli cities. Most of these were intercepted by Israel’s air defense systems, but a number – including the missile that struck the residential building – penetrated defences, causing civilian deaths and injuries.
Israeli emergency crews worked amid debris and wreckage, as air-raid sirens continued to wail across central Israel. Footage from the scene showed significant structural damage and dust-covered streets as residents sheltered during repeated alerts.
The attack has once again brought the human toll of the conflict into focus, prompting renewed international concern. World leaders have urged restraint and a return to diplomatic engagement to prevent broader regional escalation, even as military actions continue on multiple fronts.
Analysts say the strike underscores how the conflict – initially sparked by strikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets – has now reached a stage where civilian areas in Israel are being directly hit. The latest deaths represent the highest single civilian toll reported on the Israeli side since Iran’s current retaliatory campaign began.
As both sides exchange fire, the situation remains volatile, and further developments are expected as international pressure grows for de-escalation.
