Analysis: The Story of Malam Bashar Sani and the Reality of Insecurity in Northern Nigeria

AA TIJJANI
The story of Malam Bashar Sani has once again highlighted the harsh reality faced by many communities in Northern Nigeria as a result of kidnapping and banditry. This incident is not merely the story of one individual; rather, it reflects the broader security crisis affecting many people across the region.

The late Malam Bashar Sani once served as a Director at the College of Education in Maru, Zamfara State. Several years ago, armed bandits kidnapped his two wives, forcing him to pay a ransom of about ₦10 million to secure their release.

Months later, tragedy struck again when the same criminal elements kidnapped his younger brother, Hassan. In order to free him, the family was compelled to pay another ransom of ₦3.5 million.

Out of fear for his family’s safety, Malam Bashar Sani later relocated his household to a more crowded area, hoping that living among more people would provide greater security. For about a year and a half, the family lived in relative peace.

However, the bandits eventually tracked them down again. In another attack, they kidnapped Malam Bashar Sani along with one of his wives—who had previously been kidnapped—and his daughter.

This time, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of ₦20 million for his release. Despite desperate efforts by family members and associates, they were only able to raise ₦7 million, which fell far short of the demanded amount.

After spending 42 days in captivity, the kidnappers killed Malam Bashar Sani. His wife and daughter were later released.

A Major Lesson for Society and Government
The story of Malam Bashar Sani highlights the severe security challenges in parts of Northern Nigeria, where paying ransom does not always guarantee the safety or survival of victims.

Security analysts note that such incidents demonstrate how kidnapping has evolved into a major criminal enterprise in certain areas, with some victims and families targeted repeatedly.

The incident has also reignited debates about the urgent need for stronger security measures, improved intelligence operations, and better protection for rural communities that are frequently exposed to attacks by armed groups.

The Impact on Families
Beyond the loss of life, such tragedies leave families devastated emotionally and financially, especially after paying huge sums of money as ransom.

Observers warn that unless stronger and more sustainable security strategies are implemented, similar incidents may continue to occur in many villages, communities, and local government areas.

Malam Bashar Sani’s death has left his family and community in deep mourning. Many continue to pray that God grants him eternal rest and gives his loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.
