Abba Kabir Scraps Kano Higher Education Ministry Headed By Deputy Gov, Gwarzo

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the dissolution of the state’s Ministry of Higher Education, which, until now, was headed by the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

The decision was disclosed in an official statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who added that the dissolution is part of government restructuring aimed at strengthening coordination and accelerating reforms in the education sector.

According to the statement, the functions of the scrapped ministry will now be integrated into the Ministry of Education, which will continue to operate as the central body responsible for overseeing education in the state.

Under the new arrangement, a dedicated department for higher education will be created within the Ministry of Education to manage the affairs of tertiary institutions across the state.

The statement further explained that the department will operate under the supervision of a Permanent Secretary, supported by other administrative staff, to ensure effective management and coordination of higher education institutions in Kano.

The restructuring, the government noted, is designed to improve policy alignment, reduce bureaucratic overlap, and fast-track ongoing reforms in the state’s education system.

Observers say the move could streamline decision-making and enhance the implementation of educational policies, particularly in the management of universities, polytechnics, and colleges owned by the state government.

The Kano State Government has in recent months introduced several reforms in the education sector as part of Governor Yusuf’s broader agenda to improve learning outcomes and institutional governance.
