UNICEF Raises Alarm as Violence Claims More Young Lives in East and North Africa
In a strongly worded statement, UNICEF urged all governments and parties involved in ongoing conflicts to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law. The organisation called for immediate steps to end the killing, injuring, arrest, detention, and psychological trauma inflicted on children across the region.
“UNICEF urges all governments and parties to conflict to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, and take immediate action to end the violence, killing, injuring, arrest and detention and traumatizing of children. What all children need most is peace,” the agency stated.
UNICEF emphasised that children continue to bear the brunt of regional crises, with many losing their lives, being separated from their families, or enduring severe emotional and physical harm. The organisation stressed that such conditions not only violate children’s fundamental rights but also threaten the long-term stability and development of affected countries.
Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that the combination of armed conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and inadequate access to essential services is creating an environment where millions of children remain at extreme risk.
UNICEF reiterated its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in East and North Africa but insisted that sustainable solutions require an immediate end to hostilities.
“As the world witnesses the unacceptable suffering of children in conflict zones, the need for collective global action has never been more urgent,” the statement added.
The agency called on leaders, international organisations, and civil society to intensify efforts toward peacebuilding, protection of civilian populations, and strengthening humanitarian access in all affected regions.
