Two Taraba Senators Defect to APC, Boosting Ruling Party’s Strength in 10th Senate

The political landscape of the 10th National Assembly shifted further on Wednesday as two senators from Taraba State—Senator Shuaibu Lau (Taraba North) and Senator Haruna Manu (Taraba Central)—officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Their defections were formally announced during plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read their separate letters addressed to the Senate. Both lawmakers cited extensive consultations, prevailing political realities, and the need to better advance the developmental aspirations of their constituencies as reasons for their switch to the ruling party.

Following the announcement, members of the APC Senate Caucus rose in applause as they welcomed the defecting senators into their fold. Among those present to receive them was Senator Yunus Akintunde, representing Oyo Central, who joined the Senate leadership in extending goodwill and solidarity. Akintunde reaffirmed the caucus’s commitment to working collaboratively on legislative priorities and national development.

The atmosphere in the chamber reflected a growing confidence within the majority caucus. Senate President Akpabio lightened the moment by inviting the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, to react to the development—prompting mild laughter across the floor due to the PDP’s shrinking numbers.

The latest defections further consolidate the APC’s numerical strength in the Senate, reinforcing its dominance as legislative activities gather momentum for the year.
