Slot Confirms Liverpool’s January Move for Geertruida Collapsed

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that the club made a genuine attempt to strengthen their defensive options during the January transfer window, but a proposed move for Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida ultimately failed after the player became unavailable.

Speaking during a media briefing, Slot explained that the Reds had actively explored late-window opportunities to reinforce the squad amid a series of injuries, particularly in defence. Geertruida—currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig and previously coached by Slot at Feyenoord—was identified as a suitable and experienced option.

However, the deal collapsed before deadline day.

“That’s why we tried to strengthen the squad in the winter break and the player you mentioned, in the end, wasn’t available,” Slot stated.
“But we’ve tried to strengthen the squad — that is clear.”

Complex Loan Structure Blocked the Transfer

Although Liverpool were prepared to move for the versatile defender, sources within the English press indicate that Sunderland were unable to sanction his departure due to complications around his loan agreement and their inability to secure an adequate replacement. As a result, Geertruida could not be released, shutting the door on Liverpool’s approach.

The 25-year-old, who has operated both as a right-back and centre-back throughout his career, was seen as an ideal fit for Slot’s tactical system and as timely cover given Liverpool’s injury concerns.

Liverpool’s Injury Situation Drove the Attempt

Slot acknowledged that Liverpool’s injury list has put significant pressure on squad depth, with several defensive players sidelined in recent weeks. While he expressed satisfaction with the overall quality of the team, he admitted the additional burden made the pursuit of reinforcements a priority.

“I’m really happy with the players we have,” he said, “but of course, it becomes more difficult when you sustain injuries in key positions.”

Long-Term Signing Secured — but Not Immediate Relief

Despite the setback, Liverpool did complete the acquisition of young French defender Jérémy Jacquet, who will join the club in the summer. His arrival is part of the club’s broader long-term defensive planning, but it does not address the immediate gaps caused by current injuries.

Looking Ahead

With the winter window now closed, Slot will be forced to manage the remainder of the season using existing resources. Liverpool remain competitive on multiple fronts, but the lack of mid-season reinforcements means the team’s resilience will be tested as the campaign intensifies.

The club’s pursuit of Geertruida also raises expectations that Liverpool may revisit the move in the summer, when transfer conditions—and the player’s availability—could be more favourable.
