‘Ribadu Ordered My Arrest — We Tapped His Call!’” El-Rufai
Speaking during the interview, El-Rufai claimed Ribadu directly instructed security agencies to place him in custody on Thursday.
“ICPC increasingly has become a personal tool of Nuhu Ribadu. Nuhu made the call and gave the order that I must be in custody yesterday,” El-Rufai alleged.
When pressed on how he believed Ribadu issued such an order, the former governor said he was informed through monitored communications.
“We listened to their calls. The government thinks they’re the only ones that listen to calls, but we also have our ways. He made the call, he gave the order,” he said.
Asked whether he was admitting to tapping the NSA’s phone line. El-Rufai responded:
“Someone tapped his phone. I know it is technically illegal, but the government does it all the time. They listen to our calls without a court order.”
In a surprising contrast, El-Rufai commended the for what he termed “greater professionalism” in handling issues related to him.
He confirmed that he intends to honour the EFCC’s invitation:
“The EFCC has shown itself to be more professional in this particular instance. On Monday, by the grace of God, I’ll go and see them.”
The remarks have triggered widespread debate over alleged illegal surveillance, deepening political tensions, and the use of anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria’s ongoing power struggles.
