Ramadan Clash: INEC Moves to Review 2027 Election Date Amid National Outcry

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will consult the National Assembly after nationwide criticism trailed its decision to fix the 2027 presidential election for February 20, a date that falls during the holy month of Ramadan.

The timetable has sparked outrage from religious groups, political leaders, and citizens who argue that holding elections during Ramadan could suppress voter turnout and show insensitivity to millions of fasting Muslims.

INEC says the dates were set according to constitutional requirements but insists it is open to adjustments pending discussions with lawmakers.

The nation awaits the outcome as pressure mounts for a review.
