Nigerians Face Fresh Blackout Fears as Gas Supply to Key Power Stations Plummets
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NISO revealed that the decline in gas delivery wss due to a scheduled maintenance shutdown at a key gas supply facility. The maintenance, slated to run from 12 to 15 February 2026, will temporarily limit the volume of gas available to power stations.
According to NISO, the facilities directly affected include Egbin, Azura, Sapele, and Transcorp Power Plants. In addition, some National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) plants — including NDPHC Sapele, Olorunsogo, and Omotosho — may also face operational constraints due to the broader impact of gas-balancing challenges across the network.
Despite the expected shortfall in electricity supply, NISO reassured Nigerians that all decisions taken during the maintenance period will strictly adhere to established operational procedures, grid security protocols, and system reliability standards.
The operator further assured stakeholders and electricity consumers that the situation was closely monitored and that full gas supply was expected to be restored by 16 February 2026, after the completion of the maintenance work.
The temporary reduction adds to ongoing concerns about power availability nationwide, but authorities maintained that the measures were necessary to ensure long-term stability and reliability of the gas and electricity infrastructure.
