Kano-Born Innovator Develops AI-Powered Anti-Rust Robot

A young Nigerian researcher from Kano, Maimuna Umar Zarewa, has designed an advanced intelligent robot capable of detecting and eliminating rust instantly — a breakthrough with significant potential for the global oil and energy sector.

Zarewa, who hails from Rogo Local Government Area, is currently a doctoral student at a science university in . Her innovation uses a unique combination of light-based chemical processing derived from petroleum waste and artificial intelligence to identify and correct corrosion with remarkable speed.

According to details shared about the project, the robot scans metal surfaces, detects rust formation in real time, and applies immediate corrective action. By using light extracted from petroleum by-products, it performs the procedure efficiently while minimizing environmental impact.

Experts say the technology has immense potential for the global oil and gas industry, where corrosion remains one of the costliest and most persistent challenges.

The application could reduce maintenance downtime, extend the lifespan of pipelines and equipment, and save companies millions of dollars in repair and replacement costs.

Zarewa’s innovation adds to the growing list of groundbreaking contributions by young Nigerian scientists making waves on the international stage.

Her work is also expected to inspire more investment in research and development within Africa’s technology ecosystem.

Industry observers have described the invention as a timely and impactful solution that aligns with global efforts to improve safety, sustainability, and efficiency in energy production.
