Gunshots, Chaos as Thugs Attack During ADC Event in Edo
The incident occurred during a high-profile political gathering organised to welcome, Olumide Akpata, who formally defected to the African Democratic Congress, (ADC). Obi had joined party leaders and supporters for the ceremony at the party’s state secretariat.
Gunshots Erupt as Convoy Moves to Oyegun’s Residence
Trouble began shortly after the event, when the delegation departed the ADC Secretariat and headed for the home of elder statesman . According to witnesses, a group of armed thugs intercepted the convoy and opened fire without warning.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, narrated that multiple shots rang out as the attackers advanced aggressively. Several bullets reportedly struck the gate of Odigie-Oyegun’s residence, while vehicles in the convoy were vandalised in the chaos.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as supporters scrambled for cover. While official casualty figures have not been confirmed, local reports indicate that at least one woman may have sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
The Obidient Movement has condemned the incident, calling it a “direct attack on democracy” and alleging that the assault appeared to be a targeted attempt on Obi’s life.
Police Yet to Issue Official Statement
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had not released a formal statement and no arrests had been confirmed. The lack of immediate security response has further raised concerns among political observers and citizens.
