Endless Flames: Why Singa Market Keeps Exploding into Fire

Kano — Following yet another fire outbreak at Singa Market on Saturday, safety analysts and commercial stakeholders have outlined key reasons behind the repeated infernos ravaging one of Kano’s most congested business hubs.

Initial reports indicated that the latest fire started in the Gidan Gilas section, an area filled with highly flammable goods, throwing traders into panic and despair.

Experts identify seven major causes of recurring fires in Singa Market:

1. Extreme congestion and lack of market structure

The market is overcrowded, with shops and makeshift stalls jammed together. This helps the fire spread quickly and makes it difficult for firefighters to access the affected area.

2. Damaged electrical wiring and unsafe power usage

Many shops rely on old cables, unsafe connections, and overloaded sockets—conditions that frequently lead to sparks and electrical short circuits.

3. Presence of highly flammable goods

Singa Market is packed with plastics, household items, provisions, and cosmetic products that burn extremely fast once ignited.

4. Absence of fire safety equipment

There are hardly any functional fire extinguishers, accessible water sources, or properly marked emergency exits. Traders often block passageways with goods, making rescue efforts more difficult.

5. Slow and challenged fire service response

Fire trucks struggle to enter the narrow, obstructed paths. During the recent incident, firefighters even ran out of water, forcing reliance on private water tankers.

6. Old market design and unregulated structures

The market has not undergone substantial renovation for decades. Traders frequently erect makeshift extensions and structures without any fire-safety considerations.

7. Harmattan dry season conditions

The dry wind and dusty weather during Harmattan help fire spread rapidly, turning small incidents into major outbreaks.

Traders and community leaders are urging state authorities to urgently restructure the market, widen access roads, and provide proper fire safety training and equipment.

Recently, the Kano State Government announced plans to redesign major markets, expand access routes, and support victims who suffered losses.

Meanwhile, assessments are still ongoing to determine the full scale of damage, as affected traders continue to appeal for immediate intervention to safeguard lives and property.
