Deadly Mine Tragedy Claims At Least 37 Lives in Plateau

A tragic mining incident in central Nigeria has led to the death of at least 37 miners, after they reportedly inhaled toxic gas released within an underground tunnel. 

The disaster, which occurred in Gbar Village within Kanke Local Government Area, has thrown the local mining community into mourning and raised fresh concerns over safety standards in the sector.

According to early investigations, a buildup of harmful emissions—believed to be carbon monoxide—filled the mine shaft while miners were underground. The victims were said to have collapsed due to lack of oxygen before rescue teams could reach them.

Local authorities confirmed the rising death toll on Friday, noting that emergency responders were still assessing the full impact of the incident. Officials said several miners were also hospitalized after inhaling dangerous fumes but are responding to treatment.

Authorities React

The Plateau State Police Command described the incident as “a major industrial tragedy that highlights the urgent need for strict adherence to mining safety protocols.” Security operatives and environmental experts have since cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties.

Community leaders say most of the miners involved were young men who relied on artisanal mining as their primary source of income. Families have continued to gather at the site in grief, awaiting official identification of the deceased.

Mining Risks in Nigeria

Mining accidents remain a recurring problem in various regions of the country, especially where artisanal miners operate without proper ventilation systems or protective equipment. Environmental activists have repeatedly warned that the lack of regulatory enforcement increases the likelihood of such tragedies.

A government spokesperson revealed that a full investigation has been launched to determine:

  • The exact source of the toxic emissions
  • Whether the operators complied with safety regulations
  • Possible negligence leading to the fatalities

Government Promises Accountability

Authorities in Plateau State have pledged support for affected families and assured that those responsible for any safety breaches will face the law.

“We cannot continue to lose citizens in preventable incidents,” an official said. “This tragedy must serve as a turning point for mining safety enforcement.”

Burial Arrangements and Community Mourning

Mass burial arrangements are being considered as the community struggles to cope with the sudden loss of dozens of young men. Religious and traditional leaders are offering counseling and support to grieving families.
