Breaking: Nigerian Army Denies U.S. Weapons Drop Amid Social Media Rumors!
The claims, which spread rapidly on social media and some online news platforms, suggested that the U.S. had covertly supplied arms to support the military’s ongoing operations against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal groups in the North. However, Defence sources described the allegations as entirely false and misleading, cautioning that such misinformation could create confusion and panic among the public.
Military Clarification
Top military officials clarified that:
- No U.S. aircraft entered Nigerian airspace for the purpose of delivering weapons or equipment.
- No joint airdrop operation between the U.S. and Nigerian Armed Forces took place in any part of the country.
- Any military operation of such scale would require strict clearance, formal protocols, and official communication, none of which occurred.
The military emphasized that the reports are baseless and not grounded in fact, urging citizens to rely solely on verified updates from official defence channels.
Context of Nigeria–U.S. Security Cooperation
While Nigeria maintains a longstanding defence partnership with the United States, including:
- training of personnel,
- intelligence sharing,
- and legal procurement of military equipment,
the military clarified that there has been no emergency or covert delivery of weapons by U.S. forces to Nigerian troops in recent times. Officials stressed that all collaboration with foreign partners occurs under transparent, authorized, and closely monitored protocols.
Warning to the Public
Military authorities urged Nigerians to:
- Disregard social media rumours,
- Avoid spreading unverified information,
- And report suspicious posts or messages that could undermine security operations.
They warned that circulating false reports could inadvertently aid terrorists or criminal elements by creating uncertainty or distrust about the country’s defence readiness.
