Bandits Kill 26 in Fresh Attack on Niger Communities, Torch Police Station and Loot Shops
According to local sources, dozens of heavily armed attackers stormed the two communities in the early hours, shooting indiscriminately and setting homes and public structures ablaze. Residents confirmed that the bandits burned down the police station in the area, leaving the communities without any form of security presence. Several shops were also looted during the raid, with food items, livestock, and valuables carted away.
Community leaders say the assault appears to be a brutal retaliation after residents publicly appealed for government intervention and the establishment of a military base to curb the persistent insecurity plaguing the region. The gunmen reportedly accused the villagers of “inviting trouble” before threatening more devastating attacks if the community continues to seek government support.
A resident who managed to flee described the scene as “a massacre,” recounting how families ran into the bushes as gunshots echoed for hours.
Local authorities have yet to issue an official casualty update, but emergency responders and community volunteers continue to recover bodies, with fears that the death toll may rise.
The Borgu axis has witnessed repeated attacks by criminal gangs in recent years, despite ongoing military operations in parts of Niger State. The latest assault has triggered fresh calls for urgent deployment of security forces, as residents warn that the bandits’ threats of further violence could plunge the area into deeper crisis.
State officials were expected to conduct an assessment visit, while security agencies reportedly planned reinforcement operations in the region.
More details are expected as authorities respond to the escalating insecurity.
