University Student Dies by Suicide
A student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State, has died by suicide in a tragic incident that has shocked the campus community and renewed concerns over gambling-related stress among young people.
The deceased, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of family members, was reportedly found lifeless on Tuesday in what authorities described as an apparent suicide. Preliminary accounts from fellow students who spoke to ZANCEN YAU247, suggested the incident may be linked to severe emotional distress following losses incurred through online gambling.
University sources said the student had been visibly withdrawn in recent days, with some colleagues claiming he confided in friends about mounting financial pressure.
While these accounts are yet to be officially confirmed, police say
investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command said officers had visited the scene and commenced inquiries. “We received a report of an unnatural death involving a student of IBB University. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and any contributing factors,” the spokesperson stated.
The management of IBB University expressed sadness over the development, describing it as a painful loss to the institution. In a brief statement, the university said it was cooperating with security agencies and had activated counseling support for affected students.
“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased at this difficult time,” the statement read.
Student leaders have called on the university and relevant authorities to strengthen mental health support services on campus and address the growing influence of online betting platforms among undergraduates. “Many students are battling silent pressures—financial, academic, and social. We need proactive counseling and awareness to prevent further tragedies,” a student union representative told ZANCEN YAU247.
ZANCEN YAU247 learnt that the incident has sparked wider conversations on social media about youth mental health and the risks associated with gambling, especially as betting apps become increasingly accessible to students.
When ZANCEN YAU247 contacted experts on this sad incident, they advised the public to always observe if someone they know is struggling with emotional distress or thoughts of self-harm, to seek help from a trusted person, a counselor, or a qualified mental health professional, saying support and early intervention can save lives.
