UN Warns of ‘Catastrophic’ Hunger Crisis in Nigeria

Abuja — The United Nations has warned that Nigeria is facing a potential “catastrophic” hunger crisis as funding for food aid rapidly runs out.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said millions of vulnerable Nigerians could lose access to life-saving assistance in the coming months unless urgent funding is secured. The agency estimates that over 35 million people may face severe food insecurity in 2026, particularly in conflict-affected northern regions.

Rising insecurity, inflation, and displacement have worsened the situation, prompting the UN to call on the government and international donors to act quickly to prevent a humanitarian disaster.
