Tinubu Holds Closed-Door Talks With Kano Governor
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday held a closed-door meeting with the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as part of ongoing consultations on national security and governance reforms.
The meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, ZANCEN YAU24 learnt was attended by a few senior aides but was largely shielded from the media, underscoring the sensitivity of the issues discussed.
Presidency sources who confided in ZANCEN YAU24 said the meeting focused on the worsening security situation in parts of the North-West, particularly banditry, kidnapping, and communal tensions affecting Kano and neighbouring states.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, President Tinubu reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting state governments with intelligence sharing, security coordination, and socio-economic interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity.
Governor Yusuf was said to have briefed the president on recent security challenges in Kano, including urban crime and spillover effects from bandit-prone areas, while also outlining the state government’s initiatives on policing collaboration, youth engagement, and economic recovery.
ZANCEN YAU24 gathered that security, governance issues also featured prominently in the talks. Sources disclosed that the president and the governor exchanged views on fiscal management, infrastructure development, and federal-state cooperation, especially in education, healthcare, and agriculture.
Speaking briefly to journalists after the meeting, Governor Yusuf described the engagement as “productive,” noting that Kano State would continue to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure peace and stability.
“We discussed key issues affecting our people, particularly security and good governance. Mr President has shown strong commitment to supporting Kano and other states,” the governor said.
The meeting comes amid renewed national debate over security reforms and the role of sub-national governments in tackling crime and unrest.
Analysts say the consultation signals the Tinubu administration’s effort to strengthen collaboration with state leaders, especially in strategic states like Kano, one of Nigeria’s most populous and politically influential states.
Neither the Presidency nor the Kano State Government released an official statement immediately after the talks, but further engagements are expected as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to stabilize the country and drive governance reforms.
