How Drunk Police Officer Frees 13 Detainees to “Celebrate” New Year

A shocking and unusual incident has sparked public outrage in Zambia after a police officer allegedly released 13 detainees from custody while under the influence of alcohol, telling them to go and celebrate the New Year.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, and has since drawn national and international attention due to the serious security implications involved.

According to official statements from the Zambia Police Service, the officer involved was Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, who was on duty at the Leonard Cheelo Police Post.

Reports indicate that the officer became intoxicated while on duty. In that state, he allegedly forcefully took the cell keys from another officer, unlocked the holding cells, and told the detainees that they were free to leave so they could “cross over into the New Year.”

At the time, 15 suspects were in custody for various offences, including assault, burglary, and robbery. Thirteen of them escaped after the cells were opened, while two reportedly chose not to flee.

After the incident, the officer himself reportedly fled the station but was later arrested by fellow officers. The Zambia Police Service confirmed that he is now in custody and will face both disciplinary and criminal charges.

Police authorities also launched a manhunt to re-arrest the escaped detainees, stressing that the escape poses a serious risk to public safety.
In a statement, the police leadership condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as unprofessional, irresponsible, and a gross abuse of authority.

The bizarre nature of the incident has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many expressing disbelief that a law enforcement officer could compromise public safety in such a manner.

Some commentators described the act as reckless, while others questioned internal controls within the police force, especially during festive periods when alcohol consumption is high.

Despite some reports circulating online, it is important to clarify that:
The incident did not involve a prison or correctional officer
It occurred at a police station, not a prison facility

The individuals released were suspects in police custody, not convicted prisoners
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that strict measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. The police also urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to track down the escapees.

The New Year’s Eve incident has raised serious concerns about discipline and accountability within law enforcement. As Zambia moves to address the fallout, the case serves as a stark reminder of how one moment of irresponsibility can endanger public safety and undermine trust in security institutions.
