Bandit Ambush in Zamfara Kills Five Soldiers, One Police Officer

Zamfara State, Nigeria — At least five Nigerian soldiers and one police officer have been killed following a deadly ambush by suspected bandits on a security convoy in Zamfara State, further underscoring the persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The attack occurred on Monday along the Bingi–Kekun Waje–Gusau Road, shortly after troops attached to Operation FANSAN YAMMA concluded a three-day clearance operation across parts of Birnin Magaji and Anka Local Government Areas.
According to military sources, the joint security team was responding to a distress call when heavily armed gunmen opened fire from concealed positions, catching the convoy off guard. Despite the surprise assault, the troops reportedly engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

A statement by the Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA confirmed that five soldiers and one police officer paid the supreme sacrifice during the encounter, while efforts were made to prevent the assailants from advancing into nearby communities.

Military Launches Counter-Ambush
In response to the attack, a Mobile Strike Team supported by the 1 Brigade Quick Reaction Force was swiftly deployed to the area. The reinforcement, led by the Brigade Commander, reportedly forced the attackers to retreat after a counter-ambush operation.

Military intelligence suggests that some notorious bandit leaders operating in the axis may have sustained injuries during the confrontation, although official confirmation is still awaited.

Zamfara State remains one of the states worst hit by banditry, kidnapping, and armed violence, with frequent attacks on civilians and security forces despite ongoing military operations. Residents continue to call for sustained action and improved intelligence to dismantle criminal networks operating across forests and rural communities.

The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to restoring peace in the region and vowed to continue aggressive operations against armed groups threatening national security.
