FG Withdraws Terrorism Financing Charges Against Former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, Son

The Federal Government has officially withdrawn terrorism financing charges previously filed against former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdul'aziz Malami.

The development was disclosed in court on Wednesday by the prosecuting counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, who informed the court that the government had decided to discontinue the terrorism-related allegations against the former minister and his son.

However, Kehinde clarified that the Federal Government would proceed with other charges against Malami relating to alleged financial misconduct and the handling of illicit funds. This indicates that while the terrorism financing accusations have been dropped, the legal battle involving the former justice minister is far from over.

Counsel to Malami, Shaibu Aruwa, confirmed the development before the presiding judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, stating that the defense team had received an amended charge sheet reflecting the changes made by the prosecution.

The case has attracted significant public attention due to Malami’s prominent role in Nigeria’s previous administration and the seriousness of the initial allegations. Legal analysts say the withdrawal of the terrorism charges could reshape the direction of the trial, while the remaining financial-related accusations are expected to continue to be contested in court.
