PDP Yet to Finalize Candidate but Signals Likely Presidential Flagbearer for 2027

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has begun indicating the direction it may take regarding its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following its decision to zone the ticket to the southern region of the country.

Reports suggest that the party is actively consulting with key political figures from Southern Nigeria as part of early efforts to build consensus ahead of the next presidential race. Party insiders say the consultations are aimed at identifying a strong candidate capable of unifying the party and mounting a credible challenge in the 2027 election.

Several influential politicians from the South have emerged in discussions as possible contenders for the PDP presidential ticket. Among those frequently mentioned are, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Former and Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel

Sources within the party indicate that informal engagements and political calculations are ongoing, although no formal endorsement has been made.

The PDP’s decision to reserve its presidential ticket for the South is widely seen as an attempt to maintain Nigeria’s longstanding power-sharing arrangement between the northern and southern regions. The arrangement, often referred to as zoning, is intended to promote political balance, national unity, and inclusiveness.

Despite growing speculation, PDP officials have emphasized that the party has not selected a presidential candidate for the 2027 election. They maintain that the nomination process will remain open, transparent, and competitive for all qualified aspirants from the southern region.

Political observers note that the early maneuvering reflects the intensifying preparations among major parties as Nigeria gradually approaches the next general election cycle.
