“ASUU Strikes Ended Forever!” — FG Declares as Deal Nears with Non-Academic Staff🎓🔥

The Federal Government has declared that the long-standing cycle of industrial actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been permanently resolved, assuring students and parents that disruptions to academic activities in public universities are now a thing of the past.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during an event held at the innovation hub of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lagos. He stated that the government had successfully addressed the key issues that previously led to repeated strikes by university lecturers.

According to the minister, the government and ASUU reached a landmark agreement on January 14, 2026, which includes a 40 percent salary increase for academic staff, improved pension benefits, and renewed commitments to better funding and stability within Nigeria’s university system. He noted that the implementation of the salary adjustment commenced shortly after the agreement was finalized.

Alausa dismissed recent reports suggesting that ASUU had issued a fresh strike ultimatum, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading. He explained that he had personally verified the situation with the union’s leadership and confirmed that the statements circulating in the media were taken out of context.

“We have resolved the issues,” the minister said, emphasizing the government’s determination to maintain uninterrupted academic calendars and restore confidence in the nation’s higher education sector.

The minister further disclosed that negotiations with the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have reached an advanced stage, with a draft agreement already prepared. He expressed optimism that the final deal would be signed in the coming weeks, thereby ensuring industrial harmony among both academic and non-academic staff.

He stressed that the administration remains committed to safeguarding the future of Nigerian students by preventing prolonged closures of tertiary institutions and promoting a stable learning environment across the country.
