IGP Kayode Egbetokun Abruptly Resigns — Tunji Disu to Take Over!
Sources within the Presidential Villa in Abuja say President Bola Ahmed Tinubu summoned Egbetokun on Monday, where he was reportedly instructed to step down and prepare his handover notes — a request the top police officer ultimately complied with.
According to multiple security sources, Egbetokun’s resignation came amid rising pressure over his continued stay in office well past the age and service limits traditionally observed in the Nigeria Police Force. Critics and legal experts argued his position had become untenable despite a 2024 amendment to the Police Act that allowed for extended tenure.
Though no official statement has yet been issued by the Presidency or Nigeria Police Force, preparations are already underway for a formal transition at Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Stepping in to lead the force is Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu, a seasoned police officer currently heading the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos, who is expected to be sworn in imminently.
This dramatic leadership shake-up marked one of the most significant changes at the helm of Nigeria’s policing system in recent memory, as the nation watches to see how the new leadership will address ongoing security challenges and public demands for reform.
