South Africa Orders Israeli Ambassador to Leave Within 72 Hours, as Israel Issues Reciprocal Expulsion
Johannesburg, South Africa — The Government of South Africa has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Israeli ambassador to depart the country, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two states amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
According to the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the decision was taken in response to what it described as “systematic oppression and the killing of Palestinians by the State of Israel.”
Pretoria noted that the move aligned with its longstanding position advocating for the protection of human rights and adherence to international law.
In a swift countermeasure, the Government of Israel announced the expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador from Tel Aviv, further deepening the diplomatic rift that has widened in recent months.
South Africa has been among the most vocal critics of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, repeatedly calling on the international community to intervene and halt actions it characterizes as “unlawful killings, severe human rights violations, and breaches of international humanitarian law.”
Analysts say the latest diplomatic exchange could intensify international pressure at both the United Nations and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where South Africa has initiated legal proceedings accusing Israel of acts constituting genocide.
As the crisis in Gaza continues to reshape global diplomatic alignments, observers warn that divisions may further deepen between nations that support Israel and those that stand firmly with the Palestinian cause.
