Nigerian Troops Free Hostages, Clash With Militants in Northwest
Nigerian security forces have rescued several hostages and engaged in fierce clashes with armed militants during recent military operations in the country’s northwest, authorities have confirmed.
The operations, carried out in parts of Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna states, were aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and disrupting the activities of armed groups responsible for kidnappings, banditry, and attacks on rural communities. Military sources said the troops acted on credible intelligence that led them to the locations where hostages were being held.
During the operations, troops reportedly exchanged gunfire with the militants, forcing them to retreat in some areas. Several hostages, including women and children, were freed and have since been reunited with their families, while others are receiving medical attention and psychological support.
Security sources said some militants were neutralized during the clashes, while weapons, ammunition, and motorcycles were recovered. However, details of casualties on the side of the military were not immediately disclosed.
Residents of affected communities expressed relief following the rescue operations, noting that kidnappings and attacks had instilled fear and disrupted farming and daily life across the region.
The Nigerian military said it remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal groups operating in the northwest and urged the public to continue providing useful information to support ongoing security efforts.
The northwest has in recent years been plagued by armed banditry and militant violence, prompting intensified military campaigns as part of efforts to restore peace and stability to the region.
