Kano state Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Sets to Join APC

KANO, Nigeria — Today, Friday, January 23, 2026, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf submitted his resignation letter from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), stating that he took the decision due to internal crises and growing challenges within the party.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, it was disclosed that the governor wrote to the NNPP ward chairman of Diso-Chiranchi in Gwale Local Government Area, formally notifying him of his withdrawal from the party, which will take effect from the 25th of this month.

The governor expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunity given to him since 2022 and for the support he received.

He said persistent leadership problems and official internal conflicts made it necessary for him to leave the party in order to protect the interests of the people of Kano State.

In addition to the governor, 21 members of the State House of Assembly, 8 members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen also left the NNPP alongside him.

Following his exit from the NNPP, Governor Abba Yusuf is expected to deliver a special address in which he will announce his new political affiliation. There is speculation that he may join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following a recent private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This development signals a major shift in Kano State politics, especially as preparations begin for the 2027 elections, with the defection likely to significantly affect the balance of power among Nigeria’s major political parties.
