Defence Headquarters Confirms Arraignment of Officers Over Alleged Coup Plot
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that several military officers will soon be arraigned over an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the DHQ, the officers were arrested following intelligence reports and investigations carried out in late 2025, which pointed to plans aimed at destabilising the country and undermining the constitutional government. The arrests were kept largely out of public view while security agencies conducted a thorough probe into the matter.
A senior defence source disclosed that the suspects are expected to face court-martial proceedings in line with military laws and regulations. The source stressed that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain loyal to the constitution and the democratically elected government.
“The Armed Forces will not tolerate acts of indiscipline, subversion or disloyalty within its ranks. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” the official said.
The confirmation comes amid growing public discontent over economic hardship and heightened security concerns across parts of the country, as well as recent coups and attempted takeovers in neighbouring West African nations.
Analysts believe the government is keen to send a strong signal that Nigeria will not follow the path of military takeovers witnessed in the region.
President Tinubu’s administration has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, warning that any attempt to undermine the nation’s stability will be decisively resisted.
The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to remain calm, assuring the public that the situation is under control and that the military remains professional, united, and focused on protecting the country’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
